Toshiba’s New Equium 8000S Desktop Shatters Conventional PC Design, Introducing Three Industry Firsts

Debuting a new "works-in-a-drawer" chassis design, proprietary Intelligent Cooling, and EPAK foam technology, Toshiba’s Equium 8000S is changing the way PCs are designed for serviceability

Editor’s Summary:

  • The Equium 8000S’ intuitive "works-in-a-drawer" chassis design allows immediate accessibility and upgrades to system components without the use of tools or disrupting the workspace.
  • Toshiba’s new Intelligent Cooling redefines how desktops are cooled by offering a targeted cooling system that eliminates the need for noisy chassis fans. Combined with EPAK noise dampening foam, the Equium 8000S is virtually silent.
  • Toshiba’s Equium 8000S debuts as the industry’s smallest small form factor commercial desktop, minimizing size and maximizing performance and serviceability.
  • With prices starting as low as $800, Toshiba’s new Equium 8000 series features the industry’s latest design innovations and continues to deliver the lowest total cost of ownership through stable platforms, Custom Services, build-to-order (BTO) configurations, consistent components and ease-of-upgrades and serviceability.

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 28, 2000 – The Computer Systems Group (CSG) of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. (TAIS) today introduced the industry’s smallest small form factor commercial desktop, the EquiumÔ 8000S (slim-line). Debuting with a clever works-in-a-drawer chassis design, patent-pending Intelligent Cooling and noise-dampening EPAK foam technology, the Equium 8000S is sparking the interest of IT managers and corporate PC buyers alike. With prices starting as low as $800, the Equium 8000S continues to deliver on its promise of lowering total cost of ownership

through stable platforms, Custom Services, BTO configurations, common components, and overall serviceability.

"With the introduction of the Equium 8000S, Toshiba has elevated commercial desktops to a new level of serviceability and design," said Mike Wagner, vice president, desktop marketing, TAIS, CSG. "Engineered to reduce total cost of ownership, extend product lifecycles and provide customers with a high return on their investment, the Equium 8000S is by far the industry’s most manageable, serviceable and stable desktop on the market."

High Performance, Renowned Serviceability & Custom Services

The third generation of Toshiba’s commercial desktops, the small form factor Equium 8000S continues to provide enterprise customers with a high performance, scalable PC solution, ranging from Intelâ Celeron™ 566 MHz to Pentiumâ III 1GHz processors. Equipped with common components and system image across all chassis styles, the Equium 8000S minimizes set-up time and saves costs. Combined with the quality assurance of Toshiba’s build-to-order manufacturing, Toshiba’s Equium 8000S delivers the exact computing solution corporate customers look for in a managed PC.

Sporting the industry’s first works-in-a-drawer chassis design, the Equium 8000S allows customers to effortlessly slide out the PC’s entire interior and service all internal components without the use of tools. Under the new design, the system’s hard drive, floppy, CD-ROM or memory can be quickly upgraded or replaced without any tools and without removing the monitor from the PC.

For added customer satisfaction and manageability, the Equium 8000S offers a wide array of Toshiba Custom Services including image creation, image loading, asset tagging and management. By streamlining asset management, the Equium 8000S positively impacts businesses’ bottom line and provides added value to customers at no additional charge.

Keeps Cool and Quiet with Intelligent Cooling & EPAK Foam

As PC processor speeds continue to rise, the amount of heat released into a machine increases, creating a unique challenge for desktop design. To prevent systems from overheating and in efforts to increase product life spans, Toshiba engineers have

reinvented the way desktop systems are cooled by introducing "Intelligent Cooling." The first product series to feature Intelligent Cooling, Toshiba’s Equium 8000S is cooled by focusing a low speed fan on the exact area in the desktop chassis that produces intense heat. By doing so, Toshiba pulls the heat away directly from the source. Using a specially-designed air duct, the heat is immediately carried to the outside of the chassis, keeping the rest of the chassis cool without the use of loud, high-speed fans. The air duct also acts to dampen sound, making the Equium 8000S one of the quietest desktops on the market, surpassing even the toughest European standards for noise in the workplace.

The Equium 8000S is also the first desktop to use EPAK, a heat-resistant, anti-static foam that cradles the hard drive. Shaped exactly like the hard drive’s outer case, the hard drive resting in the EPAK can be removed or upgraded without the use of any tools. The new EPAK technology also serves as a means for dampening hard drive noise.

Unsurpassed Equium Manageability & Added Support

Complementing Toshiba’s Custom Services offering, the Equium 8000S yields increased system manageability through Toshiba’s Configuration Builder CD, allowing IT professionals to enjoy reduced set-up time and costs. Additional featured software includes Intel’s LANDesk® Client Manager 6.0, Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), Wake-on-LAN and Toshiba’s exclusive power-saving SecureSleep™ with Instant-On.
