Press Release

TOSHIBA FLEXES ITS ENGINEERING MUSCLE WITH SUPER COOLING TECHNOLOGY FOR LATEST ULTRA-THIN, ULTRA-LIGHT PORTABLE PC IRVINE, Calif., April 17, 2000 - Demonstrating its engineering dominance in the computing market, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. (TAIS), Computer Systems Group (CSG) today announced the .80-inch-thin Portégé® 3440CT portable computer with Super Cooling technology. A milestone in thermodynamic design, Toshiba's Super Cooling enables increased performance levels in ultra-thin designs.

"As a pioneer in the portable PC industry, we are known for developing technically superior products that push the envelope in notebook design," said Gary Elsasser, vice president of product planning, TAIS CSG. "Our Super Cooling technology exemplifies Toshiba's commitment to quality and innovation that benefits the customer."

As a result of customer demand for faster portable computers, internal components now are reaching higher heat levels. Defusing heat is one of the biggest challenges in portable design, especially with ultra-thin portables such as Toshiba's Portégé 3440CT. Toshiba has taken the lead and developed a sophisticated yet simple design that controls heat similar to how a car's cooling system works, using water and a fan. Because liquid transfers heat much more efficiently than air, Toshiba utilizes this thermodynamic principle to liquid cool components in their portable PCs (there is a patent pending on Toshiba's use of this technology). Controlling heat in portable PCs lends to higher performance, fewer component failures and increased user comfort.

Since the introduction of the Portégé 3000 series in November 1998, this product line has been bestowed some of the industry's most prestigious accolades, including PC Magazine's 1999 Technical Excellence Award, Best Overall System Award in PC Computing's 1999 Notebook Torture Test, PC World's 1999 World Class Award for the Best Subnotebook, PC Week's 1998 Best of Comdex Award and PC Computing's 1998 MVP Product of the Year Awards.

The new Portégé 3440CT features a sleek magnesium casing and silver-metallic lid for enhanced cooling and durability. Equipped with an Intel̉ Mobile Pentium III 500MHz processor, 6 billion byte hard drive, 64MB of system memory (expandable to 192MB), high-performance graphics controller with 8MB of video memory, the Portégé 3440CT is a powerful companion device that pushes the limits of portable design. The Portégé 3440CT is capable of keeping users productive for an entire business day with nine hours of battery life with the optional high capacity battery slice.
